Scotland with its bagpipes, men in kilts and passionate history is a country where power and strength is golden and the Highland Games is display of Scotland at its brawniest!
In Perthshire, there are 14 Highland Games held at various locations throughout the year, with the closest to CLC Duchally Country Estate being the Blackford Highland Games which will be held 30th May. In its 149th year, the games promises events such as caber-tossing (you really have to see it to believe it), shot put, hammer throwing, tug o’ war, plus the usual sporting events such as track and cycling.
As well as being a serious day of sporting competition, the day is full of Scottish celebration and fun too! The games officially open with a midday parade, lead by the bagpipe band, and events will occur throughout the afternoon, finishing around 4:30pm. Watching the competitors sweat will surely make you work up an appetite, with stalls selling food, drink and products throughout the day, you’ll easily be able to reenergise! Plus, be sure to catch a glimpse of the Highland dancing, with those of various ages and skill strutting their stuff, you might even be able to pick up some moves!
What’s more, this will be the first year that the games will introduce a Kids’ Club, allowing younger ones to get involved with the fun too… although there are no miniature cabers hanging around, some of the sporting events have a youth-only (aged between 10-17 years) competition as well.
If you find yourself staying at CLC Duchally Country Estate around the time of the Blackford Highland games, with the grounds only 4 miles away, this is definitely the liveliest way to see a piece of Scottish culture.
